COLLOQUIA PAPER

Colloquia Title: INTERNET SECURITY FOR INFORMATICS STUDENTS

Speaker: SCOTT ORR

This topic interests me very mush cause I have always been attacked due to some kind of a security issue. I did not know about much of the information until I saw this lecture cast. I completely agree with the speaker on everything he has discussed in the Colloquia. I thought I knew pretty much everything about spam. But it is out of control if one email fills up with junk and usually people move on to the new email. But the speaker has discussed some very important and valuable points with lots of other topics and sub topics related to INTERNET SECURITY.

INTERNET SECURITY is not just Antivirus, Firewall, Data protection or Hacking it is way beyond that in today’s modern age. INTERNET SECURITY is about Identity Theft, Compliance (following laws and regulations), Vulnerabilities, Viruses, Spyware, Malware, Dishonest Adware, Worms, Trojan Horses, RootKits, Cyber Attacks (group force, locked out mode), BotNets, Phishing, Spam, Network protection (wired & wireless), Password protection, Intrusion detection, Account level security and lost measures.

My topic for class project was just on Viruses but I have updated that to INTERNET SECURITY. Public awareness is very low in these areas because every one knows how to turn on a pc and get on the web, check their email etc. But no one knows in details how these affect them and others related to them that use and share information from that one same pc. In today’s modern world it is called organized crime because the bad person has MOM (means, opportunity and motive) and people need to be notified and informed on different measures available protect the information and pc from such attacks.

We can take proper measures today because we have the technology to prevent these security issues. But the reason we the people are not taking these measures because of one major problem you might have heard of this it’s a common problem. I was busy or I forgot or the software’s too expensive. Also people hate reading long articles or pieces of information. I have decided to do my project in an interactive PowerPoint presentation for public awareness on INTERNET SECURITY, which will cover the topics in detail listed in the second paragraph with proper course of action to prevent these INTERNET SECURITY issues.

TWO GOOD WEBSITE DESIGNS:

NAME: GSM Arena

Why this website design is good?

This website is the ultimate source for GSM/some-CDMA handset information. This website provides detailed specifications on a phone, side-by-side comparison, customer reviews/opinions with phone ratings, pricing, easy to search by specifications and where can you buy the listed phone! Which makes it a lot easier make find a reliable handset that fits your budget and where can you get it in unlocked version without doing contracts with any wireless service providers. I have not seen a single other website that goes in this much of detail and has nice layout like this one, easy to use designed website yet.

NAME: UNITED STATES MINT

Why this website design is good?

Well I have to put this one because I have not seen a single government site this so easy to use, has great layout like this one, since it’s the government any suggested changes will take years, black color is nice but can be improved has rooms for improvements just in this area according to the new look. I worked for a private company that provided Government Solutions back in 2008-2009 for the Department Of Treasury for US MINT at that time this website was confusing as hell. I was in a call center environment our job was to assist callers in selling/customer service with one week training on just POS system we were told this website has all the information it is your best friend. We were not asked for improvements at all but I felt the need for this so I submitted sum changes and I see them today on this website after that today is the first day when I went back on this website. This website is awesome in design today, very easy to locate information today. I am going to give this website 10/10 even though it has room for color improvements first good thing government has done for the public.

TWO BAD WEBSITE DESIGNS:

NAME: Gmail/Google Email Service

Why this website is bad?

Well I have not like Gmail since it was launched, there is no doubt that it is easy to use if you know where the things are and how to locate them; otherwise there are some serious issues with this platform design. Gmail needs to add folder feature instead of tags. Because you tag the email but they all stay in one place and when you have to find one single email you have to go through the whole inbox. Tags should be there in addition to folders to sort and organize mail and easily click able from the menu, which it is missing as well. This is a very poor design trying to compete with competitors like Yahoo or Hotmail or other webmail providers out there.

NAME: Google Apps

Why this website is bad?

I have to say that Google has done a great job in providing free apps to small businesses but at the same time if the information is their it is not clear and laid-out very poorly because there is only so much you can see everything else is hidden some where and it is not easy to sign-up and find the apps you need. Very poor layout trying to overcome the competitors can be redesigned from scratch by a 10 or 12-year-old kid that knows how to create a simple webpage.

What is your most embarrassing mishap using a computer?

My most embarrassing mishap using a computer is that when I need it. It always crashes, hangs-up on me, it gets some junk virus/spyware that takes over the computer and my favorite hardware failure.
